He has worked with Wellington Saints basketball, Wellington Football, Wellington Softball, Miramar Softball and NZ handball players, as well as a variety of athletes representing New Zealand at both Olympic and World levels.

He is currently Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the New Zealand Tall Blacks. As a special project, Gavin has provided the physiotherapy, rehab and strength programmes for Steven Adams over the past seven years. McLean had a fantastic career with the Wellington Saints dating back to 1996 when he played one game as a 17-year-old. Between 1998 and 2005, McLean played 145 games for the Saints and won a championship in 2003. In 2006, he played for the Harbour Heat where in 18 games, he averaged 16.4 points per game.

Known for his excellent three-point shooting, McLean was a member of the Tall Blacks team that won a silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. In 2007, he returned to the Saints and went on to win two further championships with the team in 2010 and 2011.
