Having trouble with your compost? Smelly and slimy? Still, in the state, it started? Lumpy and lifeless? Perhaps you don’t have enough compost? Or you don’t have enough space to turn your waste into beautiful, rich, soil-enhancing compost. Every garden deserves a fully functioning compost system. If you’re currently buying compost for your garden, you’ll save just by making your next batch of compost well. And if you’re taking garden waste to the tip you’ll save on those costs too.

I’ve made compost successfully every couple of weeks for the last seven years using all sorts of systems and ingredients. There’s definitely an art and a science to making compost quickly and easily. Come and learn how! Help make a compost heap, learn why compost is important, choose a system that will work for you. Find out what to leave out and why. Plus do you need a wormery or bokashi bucket instead of or in addition to your compost system? When is it better to buy in compost and what are the best alternatives locally? Learn how to capture nutrient from organic waste to return it as fertilizer for your garden.

We'll start promptly at 10 so please gather from 9.45am at the EIT 'potting shed' at the EIT Hawke's Bay Campus 501 Gloucester Street Taradale, Napier. Follow the signs for 'Rural and Wine E'. I'll put a 'Kitchen Garden' banner outside to help you find the venue - cream building with green roof and verandah on your right just after the computer sciences building.

Please bring a warm jacket, rainwear (if it looks like rain) as we'll be outside some of the time. Please wear flat shoes with closed in toes - not jandals or sandals. Please bring your compost related questions and enthusiasm!

Could you please let me know if you're not able to attend so I can offer your place to someone else? I look forward to meeting you.

Kind regards,
