Ten years of New Zealand’s best music teaching

“In art, the best is the standard. When you hear a new violinist, you do not compare him to the kid next door; you compare him to Sternand Heifetz.” - Ursula K Le Guin

Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, ten years of ongoing success, the Akaroa Music Festival is New Zealand’s premiere residential music school. Every January, an array of distinguished international classical musicians provide ten days of lessons, masterclasses and concerts against the breathtaking backdrop of one of the world’s most beautiful seaside towns. The festival accepts advanced and enthusiastic young musicians from all over New Zealand and abroad. Classes are open to school students, university students and adults.

In 1983 Donald Armstrong was appointed Principal Second Violin of the Tivoli Sinfoniorkester in Denmark and soon after becoming Concertmaster of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice in France. He returned to New Zealand in 1987 as Associate Concertmaster of the NZSO, a position he still holds. He has appeared as soloist with the NZSO and made frequent solo appearances with the NZ Chamber Orchestra. He performs regularly with his own chamber group, the Amici Ensemble, and he recently substituted as the first violin with the NZ String Quartet in a tour to Australia. He has taught at the New Zealand School of Music.

Ten years old and going from strength to strength, the Akaroa Music Festival is building the future of New Zealand music. More information at the website.
