“If music and sweet poetry agree,
As they must needs, the sister and the brother,
Then must the love be great ’twixt thee and me,
Because thou lov’st the one and I the other.

Dowland to thee is dear, whose heavenly touch
Upon the lute doth ravish human sense;
Spenser to me, whose deep conceit is such,
As passing all conceit, needs no defence.

Thou lov’st to hear the sweet melodious sound
That Phœbus’ lute, the queen of music, makes;
And I in deep delight am chiefly drowned
Whenas himself to singing he betakes:

One god is god of both, as poets feign,
One knight loves both, and both in thee remain”

This sonnet, long attributed to Shakespeare, but in fact penned by Richard Barnfield (1574–1627), provides the inspiration for Auckland Clef Music Club’s June Concert.

Our concert will explore music based on specific texts from poets and writers of various nationalities. Of course, in many cases, it is the musical settings provided by some of the great composers that have ensured the popularity and longevity of the written works. So, alongside German lieder, we will present art songs in other European languages as well as compositions based on the texts of British and American literary masters.

Our performers will include:
- Dianne Harvey – soprano
- Michael MacMillan – bass-baritone
- Edria Voursalle Jeffs – soprano
- Malcolm Campbell – baritone
- Anne Shanks – soprano
- Graeme Fuller – piano
- Yuko Takahashi – mezzo-soprano
- Michelle Thorne – soprano
- Margaret Lindsay – soprano
- Andrew Glover – baritone

For those keen on hearing classical music on a regular basis and at a reasonable cost, Auckland Clef Music Club offers monthly concerts occurring from February through to November - normally on the third Tuesday of the month (September is an exception, so check our blogspot: http://clefclub.blogspot.co.nz for details.)

All newcomers are welcome, either as members, or on a casual basis and, of course, new singers and instrumentalists are especially welcome to augment our pool of Performing Members - Come along to see what we’re about and to arrange an audition.

As always, this April concert will be followed by a generous and tasty supper (all included in the ticket price).

If you require further details, please contact Anne. Phone: 378 8781.

We look forward to seeing you there (and just note that our door sales are cash only: No Eftpos facility available.)
