Celebrating the wonder of children’s books.

In partnership with University Book Shop Otago, Dunedin Public Libraries presents a great day out for writers, for readers, for sketchers, for dreamers. Workshops, talks and storytelling for all ages, with special guests Donovan Bixley, Lisala Halapua, Melinda Szymanik, Ella West, Mere Whaanga, and Gecko Press’ Julia Marshall.

Saturday Morning - for Writers…
10am: Jealous Saboteurs: A workshop for young writers hosted by Sue Wootton
Booking essential for this exclusive workshop, which includes a visit to Dunedin Public Art Gallery to view Francis Upritchard’s Jealous Saboteurs exhibition, followed by a workshop to create a piece of writing inspired by the artworks. (Meet initially at Dunedin Public Art Gallery for this workshop)

11am: Cracking the Code: YA writing secrets hosted by Ella West
Ella’s novels for young adults hook in the reader with gripping plots and sympathetic teen characters. Young writers and adults keen to write for the teen audience will find this workshop a mine of information for creating work that appeals to the teenage imagination.

11am: Brush Strokes and the Perfect Word: telling stories with pictures hosted by Donovan Bixley
Learn from Monkey Boy’s creator, internationally-renowned illustrator Donovan Bixley, how to marry text and imagery to perfect your picture books. Join us for this masterclass aimed at adult and young adult writers, and anyone interested in discovering how great picture books are created.

12:15pm: The Heroes Behind the Heroes
Join us for a discussion with a treasure-trove of New Zealand children’s book authors and Illustrators, hosted by Gecko Press founder, Julia Marshall. Meet the Singing Dolphin’s Mere Whaanga, Fuzzy Doodle’s Melinda Szymanik and Donovan Bixley, Night Vision’s Ella West, and The Mouse and the Octopus’ Lisala Halapua as we explore what it takes to write books for the junior market in New Zealand.

Saturday afternoon - for Readers…
Come along and meet the writers and illustrators who create wonderful New Zealand children’s books. Listen to their stories, ask them questions and get your books signed!

- 2:00pm: Melinda Szymanik (Fuzzy Doodle, Song of Kauri)

4:30pm: The Jewells in the Gecko Crown

The Library is closed, but the day is young! Join us for afternoon tea at the University Book Shop, 378 Great King Street. Coffee and cake with Julia Marshall and the Gecko Press authors.
