The Wellington Community Choir are joined by Marimba Mojo, Mbira Soc and MaleVocale from Community Music Junction together with Guinean guest singer and dancer Naby Bangoura.

Under the leadership of Julian Raphael, the Wellington Community Choir has dedicated much of its 12-year life-span to singing music from African countries. Now, for the first time, they are hosting a concert of songs, dances and instrumental numbers from African folk traditions and contemporary songs inspired by music from Africa.

The concert will begin with songs from South Africa and then Lala Simpson will lead songs from her homeland Madagascar. To the accompaniment of Marimba Mojo the choir will perform some contemporary compositions by Raphael and Chris Berry.

In the second part the audience will be treated to two traditional Shona mbira songs performed by New Zealand’s only mbira ensemble. After a contribution from MaleVocale (singing Paul Simon’s ‘Homeless’), our special guest artist Naby Bangoura will lead a traditional Guinean song along with a few choir singers before we arrive at the moment when the audience can join with the whole choir to create a great sing-along Afro-jam, to raise the roof of St Johns.
