Trinity Methodist Church’s summer season of Jazz Vespers continues. Each month the hour-long Vespers uses Jazz Music to explore spirituality alongside short reflections and prayer. Jazz is not only as played at Vespers as performance art, but as a spiritual music.

Jazz Vespers Easter Sunday- 16 Aprily:
The music will be led by John Redman (vocalist). John has recently returned from the UK and is well known in the Hawkes Bay for his jazz singing. John was involved in our Jazz Vespers for the first two seasons, both as performer and co-ordinator of the musicians for Jazz Vespers.

Donations are invited at the Vespers to support the Methodist Church’s objective of “Let the children live”. Each summer the Vespers raises around $1,600 to $2,000 for the local community groups such as Napier Women's Refuge, Napier Family Centre and Hawkes Bay Diabetes for their work in the area of youth health and safety.

This season the nominated charity is involved in youth suicide prevention. We suggest a koha of $5; however, this is voluntary. The musicians donate their time for this event.

Jazz Vespers contains elements of a concert and a worship service; offering opportunity for reflection through the notes of music and verse.

Jazz is a particularly effective resource for building inclusive community. Anyone can participate in making jazz. Even the most casual observer makes music when tapping or clapping spontaneously along with the beat.

Jazz is this infectious. It blurs the lines of listener and player and draws everyone deeper into its contours. Jazz sounds like God because jazz reflects God’s way of blurring lines. It draws people closer to God and to one another.

Improvisation captures an always-growing faith. Jazz has many entry points. Entering into the music at any time and in whatever way is a vision for life together in community. Jazz finds its home in this church setting both for those who appreciate jazz for its own sake, but also those who feel its spirituality.

The Summer Season of Jazz Vespers and Trinity runs from October to April, on the 3rd Sunday of each month.
