A performance of Bach’s Cantata BWV 147, containing the famous “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” will be the highlight of a concert to mark the Lenten season at 3 pm on Sunday, March 26.

Cantata BWV 147 is known in German by the first words of its opening chorus: Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, a particularly exciting setting for choir and orchestra with solo trumpet. Newly appointed to the most prestigious musical position in Germany, as Cantor at the Leipzig St Thomas Church, Bach reworked earlier music for a major occasion: the Feast of the Visitation of Mary.

The famous chorale tune completes two distinct sections, intended to be sung either side of the required hour-long Lutheran sermon. An expressive recitative and aria is assigned to each of the soloists: Stephanie Waterhouse, soprano, Louisa Pilkington, alto, David O’Beirne, tenor, and Ken Joblin, bass. The CBS Orchestra will be led by Natalia Lomeiko, with Ellen Doyle and Veronica Van Der Knaap playing continuo, and Keith Sayers featured on a variety of baroque oboes.

The Cathedral Choir will contribute appropriate motets by Pablo Casals and Colin Mawby, together with another extended chorale setting for orchestra and choir by Bach based on the Lenten hymn tune Breslau, sung to Take Up Your Cross.

Admission will be free, with a retiring collection, and all are warmly welcome.

Another interesting year of varied activity for the CBS Choir and Orchestra includes the regular Good Friday Bach St John Passion, more concerts, and the usual Christmas Messiah, together with a tour to Sydney during the October school holidays.

A number of vacancies exist for choral leaders within the group, who enjoy unique opportunities to perform solo roles in significant Mass and motet settings with the orchestra and choir. Leadership awards, and other scholarships, worth up to $3000 per year, are available to suitable applicants.

Those interested are invited to contact the CBS Musical Director, Don Whelan, phone 358-5873.
