There is a community-owned model for generating, storing and retailing renewable energy being set up for those living in the Wairarapa district.

This is an opportunity for you to access solar power without having to outlay a small fortune to have it installed on your own roof. You might not own your roof if you're renting, or your roof may be shaded, precluding you from considering solar although you might like to.

Energy Democracy helps establish co-operatively owned solar parks in various communities, for the cooperative's members to access the benefits of solar energy. Members of the co-op purchase shares equivalent to parcels of 2.5kW solar panels and 5kWh battery storage. Energy Democracy designs build and maintains a solar park on behalf of the members, providing energy efficiency tools to help members be efficient with their energy usage, and manage the flow of electrons through the batteries with the aim of maximising returns for members from the sale of surplus electricity. The economies of scale that can be gained through a cooperative also lower the price of participation.

Carterton District Council is actively supporting this local cooperative, sourcing suitable land and agreeing to be a cornerstone member so it also can access the benefits.
