Dénes Várjon – Piano.
Benjamin Northey – Chief Conductor.

New Commission – Philip Norman.
Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Concerto No 1 op. 15 C major.
Sergei Prokofiev – Selections from Romeo and Juliet.

The 2017 Lamb and Hayward Masterworks series opens with a sparkling fanfare, specially commissioned for the occasion by renowned Canterbury composer Philip Norman.

Performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 1, Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon makes a welcome return after appearing with the CSO in the 2012 Mozart Festival.

Várjon has been awarded the highest cultural distinction by the Hungarian Government – the Ferenc Liszt Prize, and has an extensive discography of recordings on the Naxos, Teldec, and Hyperion labels. He performs regularly with Europe’s leading orchestras and is a highly sought after chamber musician, performing alongside musicians that include Steven Isserlis, Joshua Bell, and Heinz Holliger.

Prokofiev, a master of orchestral colour, captures the romance, drama, and tragedy of Shakespeare’s best known work in his Suite from Romeo and Juliet. It is a work much admired for its descriptive musical writing and the ingenious way in which the machinations of the feuding Montague and Capulet families are depicted.
