Taradale Lions club are holding a Las Vegas Entertainment Casino Evening on 12th August 2017 to raise funds to buy a ‘cuddle cot’ for the Maternity Services Unit at the Hawkes Bay District Health Board in Hastings as they do not have one.

Many of us can only imagine what it's like losing a baby. But for 1 in every 200 parents in NZ, it's reality.

The death of a baby can be traumatising for parents and most do not want to be apart from their baby.

Having time with the baby is crucial for parents grieving after stillbirths, counsellors say.
TheCuddleCot has been internationally recognised across the world as significantly helping parents who suffer the loss of a baby. Dealing with the death of a baby is clearly an incredibly difficult event for parents and bereaved parents should be given the option of spending Time with their baby. Providing families Time with their baby is internationally encouraged by midwives, bereavement practitioners, still birth/neonatal charities, and academics. Time allows the family to form an important bond with their baby; whether changing a nappy, dressing the baby, taking photographs or simply just staying close, and this unquestionably helps families in dealing with their loss.

The problem is that in a warm room the baby’s condition can deteriorate quickly, therefore cooling the baby is absolutely essential. Transferring to and from the morgue is widely regarded as an outdated practice as it is traumatic for parents to repeatedly go through the separation process whereas the Cuddle Cot allows the family to spend every moment with their baby, precious moments where every minute counts.

The cot, which looks like a conventional Moses basket, is a cooling unit that allows families to spend extra time with their baby, by regulating its temperature.
The cot has a thin mattress which is filled with cold water and then connected to a cooling unit which is plugged in, keeping the mattress constantly cold. The blanket can also be taken out and moved into a different cot or surface if the parents wish.

The only alternatives are ice packs, which need to be changed often, or embalmment.
