Celebrate with the author the launch of Limbs Dance Company 1977 – 1989: Dance For All People, a new book by Marianne Schultz and then catch a screening covering the 12-year history of one of New Zealand's most famous dance groups curated from Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision's Limbs Collection. The films in this programme, detailed below, represent the changes in membership, styles, and aesthetics that took place over the company’s 12-year history and include live performance and rehearsal footage, along with television interviews with company members.

Only one year after beginning in 1977, Limbs’ popularity was such that the company appeared in a televised segment that included a rehearsal with Christchurch- based ballet choreographer Russell Kerr and interviews with company members including Chris Jannides, Kilda Northcott, Debra McCulloch and Shona Wilson. This segment also includes a performance of the work Scooby Do, choreographed by Mary Jane O’Reilly in 1977.

Douglas Wright’s Halcyon premiered in 1985, pleasing critics and audiences with its structural forms and lively patterning. The work was filmed in 1986 during a performance at Auckland’s Maidment Theatre and features the dancing of Shona McCullagh, Taiaroa Royal, Bruce Hopkins and Felicity Molloy.

The final work in this programme sees the company in its latter stages, when Cath Cardiff served as Artistic Director. This television appearance in 1987 shows the company in rehearsal at the Brown St, Ponsonby Auckland studio and during a schools’ workshop. Cardiff discusses her role as Artistic Director and her vision for the company ten years after its founding.
