Louise Menzies, an Auckland-based artist, offers us objects, images and situations that explore the past and present through attention to the way they are already represented.

For this exhibition, Menzies delves into feminist histories, via the Germaine Greer Archive held at the University of Melbourne.

Of particular interest to Menzies are the notecards Greer made while writing her bestselling feminist publication The Female Eunuch (1970). Her choice of notecards – here we are offered only eight out of hundreds within the greater archive – look to explicitly focus our attention on the gendered operation of language.

Digitally reproduced and set within sheets of handmade paper, the notecards hover between their original status as printed ephemera and a contemporary landscape still troubled by the politics of reproduction. Greer’s reference to the writing of Christine de Pisan is further translated via a 14th century illustration, Christine de Pisan lecturing to men, printed on silk scarves; one to be displayed in the gallery, and one to be worn further afield.

Louise Menzies' recent solo exhibitions include: Spiritual Midwifery, Gus Fisher Gallery, Auckland (2016); Time to think like a mountain, Contemporary Art Galleries, University of Connecticut (2014); and World, Business, Lifestyle, Sport, The Physics Room, Christchurch (2013). Recent print-based projects include distracted reader no. 3 with split/fountain (forthcoming); Die Toilette (Social Life of the Book), (2013) with Paraguay Press; Local Edition (2012) with The Physics Room and DDMMYY; Pursuit of an Ideal (2012) with Clouds. In 2016 Menzies was an artist in residence at the McCahon House, Auckland, following residencies in the US, Australia and Mexico.

14 October 2017 – 28 January 2018.
Opening Saturday 14 October, 4pm.
