Nick Bollinger and Adam Dudding take an entertaining and thought-provoking journey through the terrains mapped out in their newly published memoirs: Bollinger’s Goneville and Dudding’s My Father’s Island.

The pair, who were until recently distant acquaintances, learnt about each other’s books only shortly before publication in late 2016. They realised that not only had they each written a cultural and social history of New Zealand through the prism of a deeply personal memoir, but both their book covers featured the author posing in front of a vehicle on the first day of an epic journey, amid a raggle-taggle crowd of long-haired hippy-ish folk.

Then in December, both books were longlisted in the same category of the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. (My Father’s Island has now been shortlisted for the prize.)

Bollinger and Dudding took these coincidences as a sign: obviously, they should do a joint road trip, promoting their own and each other’s book during a high-mileage whirlwind tour through the North Island.

Over the course of an hour, Bollinger and Dudding will read short passages from their books, publicly pick each other’s brains about the best way to write a memoir-cultural-history, and reflect on the pleasures and perils of mining your own and your family’s life as subject matter for a book, as well as answering questions from the audience. They also have some pretty interesting photos to share, demonstrating the fashion crimes that were commonplace in New Zealand’s mid-century musical and literary scenes.

Copies of the books will be available. All welcome!
