Mainfreight 2016-15 NZ Super Saloons Championship (Night 2)

When:

Sat 7 Jan 2017, 6:30pm–10:30pm

Where: Central Motor Speedway, Sandflat Rd, Cromwell, Central Otago

Website:

Saturday, January 7 is the night when one of the country's 46 superstars of super saloons will leave Cromwell's Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway as the Mainfreight 2016-17 NZ Super Saloon Champion; an achievement that brings them the right to change their car number to 1NZ. Also decided is who gets to have 2NZ and 3NZ on their racecar doors. The big question is will any of these podium finishers be Cromwell contracted drivers Peter Dickson (11t), Daryl Ainsley (5t), Paul Wright (12t), Shane McIntyre (26t), Ray Stewart (34t) or Greig Johnston (77t)? Will the current defending champion Mark Osborne do enough to hold on to the title? Rather than wait to hear the results, be trackside to thrill to some of the fastest, most competitive and skilled Super Saloon racing you'll ever get to see. Racing starts with gates open at 2pm.

Flame-spitting, methanol fuelled 700 plus horsepower Super Saloons are definitely the big attraction but this is speedway and that means a variety of classes are also racing, and being such an important championship there's also lots of off track entertainment.

Other classes:

- Productions Best Pairs Competition (Night 2). What were once shiny, brand new Subarus, Honda's and other popular makes take on a new lease of life as stripped out, roll caged Production Class speedway racers that regularly field the biggest number of competitors. Adding an element of fun and surprise, Best Pairs teams two drivers, except they don't know who until the prize giving after racing on January 7. A real incentive not to come in contact with a fellow competitor because who knows, they might be your teammate.

- Streetstocks Round 1 of the Tri series Invercargill vs Dunedin (Night 2). Last season Cromwell's speedway fans shouted for more after being treated to the sight and sounds of cars like HQ Holden’s, Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons smashing and bashing their way around the 500 metre track. Tonight the carnage continues where you'll be surprised to see many of the cars that were crashed out yesterday have been repaired o. As the name suggests, streetstocks are former street cars stripped of all internal fittings and then strengthened to safely make heavy contact.

- Youth Ministocks (Night 2). Looking like traditional stockcars that have shrunk in the hot wash, these 1200cc powered racecars are the entry class to speedway racing with 12 - 16-year-old boys and girls at the wheel, all of them serious about winning. Yes, sparks can fly.
