Measuring the Earth: Classical calculations about world's size and shape.

Around 250 BCE, Eratosthenes accurately calculated the circumference of the Earth, for the first time in history. This was a famous achievement, even then. What exactly did he do, why, and what was the impact of his discovery? Did he have competitors, and were there flat-earthers? This course introduces you to these historical problems and context.

Target audience:
This course is for anyone interested in the history of science and philosophy or in Greco-Roman antiquity.

By the end of this course, you will have:
- Gained an understanding of the people, events and technical problems involved in ancient thinking about the size and shape of the Earth
- Gained an appreciation of and discussed the difficulties created by the nature of our evidence.
