The Middle Eastern Dance Association of New Zealand was established 25 years ago to provide a supportive environment for Middle Eastern Dance (MED), to foster interest and understanding by sharing information and educating the general public about its origins, developing and promoting ethical standards, providing a forum for dancers to discuss issues significant to the community, and facilitating learning and performance opportunities.
In 2000 the Christchurch committee created the first MEDANZ festival. Since then Festival has travelled all around the country and in 2017 returns to Christchurch for our 25th Anniversary celebration over Easter weekend (14-17 April).
The festival is a celebration of all things belly dance! Festival 2017 offers 4 days of workshops in dance, drumming and related topics, a spectacular Gala show, Hafla, shopping area plus open stage (Monday's Bazaar), and lots of opportunities to socialise and network. It is the largest annual gathering of belly dancers from all over New Zealand.
Workshops span the full spectrum of levels, with classes designed for beginners through to more advanced dancers. Most workshops offered are taught by New Zealand teachers, with two international keynote tutors in 2017: We are thrilled to welcome the mesmerising award-winning Slovakian dancer Zaghareet Daniela, direct from Cairo, and the divine Bellydance Superstar herself, Kami Liddle from the US.
We have crafted a weekend that will offer over 25 workshops, featuring our international keynote tutors, our top Kiwi teachers, and an amazing selection of music workshops. Covering technique in both oriental and tribal styles for even the newest of dancers, right through to finding tarab and teacher workshops, we really do have something for everyone!
Don't miss our splendid Gala show featuring performances by our International guests alongside our wonderful kiwi dancer. We have also provided the opportunity for everyone who attends Festival to don their costume and perform in a supportive dance environment at our Monday Open Stage, so there will be heaps of live belly dance performances to watch over the weekend!
We also have a fun selection of social activities, including a dance party, hafla, plus a full day Bazaar featuring vendors from around the country. The Festival schedule of activities along with our tutor biographies and workshop descriptions are available at www.medanz.org.nz.
We look forward to welcoming you all to Christchurch in 2017!
