As the days get darker the warm haven of a comfortable cinema feels to us like the perfect respite. We like to think that the New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) is a beacon in the midst of your winter, bringing you different worlds to explore in the company of friends and strangers.

Over 150 features and documentaries curated by a team of programmers who attend premier festivals in North America, Australia and Europe of the latest and brightest of national and world cinema will be shown on the grandest screens in 13 towns and cities around New Zealand.

NZIFF proudly presents world premieres of many New Zealand films and remains dedicated to presenting the New Zealand premiere screenings of every film shown.

For the sixth-year running, NZIFF will present its NZ’s Best short film competition. This year we received 83 submissions which programmer Michael McDonnell and Festival director Bill Gosden have shortlisted for this year’s Guest Selector, Gaylene Preston. Five to six selected New Zealand shorts will premiere in Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch where audiences are encouraged to vote for their favourite short from Preston’s shortlist. Previous Guest Selectors have included Lee Tamahori (2016), Christine Jeffs (2015), Andrew Adamson (2014), Alison Maclean (2013), and Roger Donaldson (2012).

"An indie festival that loves film more than hype." - Wall St Journal.

This year's Wellington venues include:
- Embassy Theatre
- Embassy Deluxe
- Paramount
- Paramount Bergman
- City Gallery Wellington
- The Roxy Cinema
- Light House Petone

NZIFF was founded on the principle of sharing box office income with filmmakers, providing them with the all-too-rare opportunity to launch their works locally and derive some income in the process.

Run by a charitable trust, NZIFF proudly maintains a rich tradition of diverse choice in a curated selection of expertly crafted films - features, documentaries and short films too - that deserve to be experienced with an audience. NZIFF thrives on lively interactions between films, filmmakers and New Zealand audiences and is held annually, starting in Auckland on 20 July in 2017.
