Edo de Waart Conductor
Karen Gomyo Violin

John Adams Short Ride in a Fast Machine
Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor
Beethoven Symphony No. 7 in A major

Karen Gomyo next tackles Max Bruch’s incandescent Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor. Having played the violin himself for many years, Bruch created a work that understands the idiosyncrasies of the instrument, composing a concerto of unequalled intimacy and exquisite beauty.

The concert begins with a bang with John Adams’ joyful Short Ride in A Fast Machine – an exhilarating fantasy, with the orchestra speeding through nuanced changes in the harmonic landscape.

A sense of joyful exuberance also lights up Beethoven’s sublime Symphony No. 7 in A major. With surprising surges in dynamics and dancing phrases, as well as the second movement’s now infamous funeral march, this work is rightly a great masterpiece of the canon. Enjoy this classic anew under the baton of Maestro Edo de Waart.
