Argentinian-born Tom Kreisler became one of New Plymouth’s most treasured artists, known for injecting humour into painting and drawing through the use of puns, poems and doodles.

Eager to celebrate the quirkiness of everyday life through his art, Kreisler asks his audiences to look at the world around them in a different way – encouraging both a sense of amusement and quiet contemplation.

Curated by Carolyn Matuku and Mary Porteous, art teachers at New Plymouth Boys' High School.

The Open Collection series extends the Govett-Brewster’s Ministry of Education funded Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom (LEOTC) programming. Taranaki art and art history educators are invited to reach into the Govett-Brewster Collection to develop an exhibition that enables teaching and learning for secondary school students within a gallery context. Students can have close encounters with artworks important for the understanding of New Zealand contemporary art.
