Amongst Te Manawa’s collection of First World War-related objects is a Collinson and Cunninghame window display painting from the early 1920s. It depicts a very traditional image of the Anzacs: all are men, all are white, all are soldiers, and all are casualties of the war, with the painting being steeped in the imagery of sacrifice for a noble cause.

Yet such a depiction is both partial and problematic, failing to capture the diversity of the Anzacs and the nuances of the conflict they fought in. This talk argues that Anzac Day itself should be used to remember all aspects of the First World War experience, so that we may better grasp the lessons for New Zealand in the twenty-first century.

Presented by: Dr David Littlewood of Massey University.
