Based on Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel about growing up during the Iranian Revolution, this animated feature is more richly populated, vigorous, succinct and shrewdly funny than many a flesh-and-blood drama.

Founded in 1958, the Canterbury Film Society is a member of the NZ Federation of Film Society. It offers festival-quality cinematic experiences such as classics, arthouse rarities, international gems and documentaries, local cinema and shorts - including some distinguished and innovative films never released commercially or shown on NZ television. This year's theme uses groups of films linked to people, places or style.

The 2017 27-film season runs on Mondays from 6 March to 9 October (except public holidays) with screenings at 7:30pm. Doors open 7pm for membership enquiries and ticket sales.

The Art Christchurch Gallery is a generous contemporary space and CFS members enjoy meeting before films for a glass of mulled wine, beer, home-baked food and a chat.

New members are always warmly welcome. Annual memberships run for 12 months from the date of joining and, at $132, work out at less than $5 per film; tertiary and secondary student membership is only $70. Or, buy a three-film $30 Flexi-Pass that has no expiry date.
