Tim Croucher's narrative paintings are atmospheric and accessible, rooted in the genre of landscape painting. Vast open spaces punctuated with detail, rendered in a soft colour palette give the impression that one is looking through a lens to the past. The immediate application of paint is refreshing and takes the work into the realm of neo-expressionism.

This exhibition references Croucher’s upbringing in Manawatu, and was initially shown at Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and History in 2016. The subject of memory is important to these works, that mix memory with imagination. Croucher is very aware of how childhood memories can be warped.

"Back then I was a little farm boy in the 60's and then went on to be a teenager in Fielding with nothing to do except teenage romance, cars and farming. The paintings deal with those memories, romanticised but also the collision between idyllic pastoral violence and history” says Croucher.

Croucher has become an influential figure as a painter in the Waikato region, guiding many young artists through formable years and leading by example, he teaches Contemporary Art Practice at Wintec, Hamilton.

Zeus Gallery is located at 35 Chapel Street. Access is off Marsh Street. Parking is available at the front and back of the shop.
