In a concert titled, Singing Cellos, the Cellists of Otago ensemble is joined by the second runner-up of the 2012 Lexus Song Quest final, countertenor Stephen Diaz who’s soaring, powerful and emotionally rich performance held the audience spellbound in a previous collaboration with Cellists of Otago in 2014.

The year’s concerts kick off with a performance of vocal works including Handel’s aria Ombra Mai fù, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Pie Jesu, Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasilieras no. 5, Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, Fauré Requiem, Wagner opera and Maori songs. The cello and especially cello ensembles sometimes referred to as choirs, have a close resemblance to the human voice, hence the choice of music and the title, “Singing Cellos”.

The funds raised at the concert will go towards supporting the growing need to develop cello education at all levels in Dunedin and the region.

Tickets at the door from 2:15pm.
