Part of the Mahi Aroha Summer Programme: Come and discover the beauty, diversity and dynamic nature of the mysterious Rotokawa geothermal area and learn how energy production and conservation can work side-by-side.

This exclusive visit to areas not normally accessible to the public explores the natural wonders that exist within geothermal landscapes: exquisite sulphur crystal cliffs, steaming craters and bubbling pits. Hear all about sustainable energy production occurring at the site, the mining history and the weird and wonderful plants that inhabit the area. Discover why we need to protect these special areas and the importance of pest and weed control.

Grade: 2 Easy - Suitable for people with average fitness and reasonable health.

Transport: personal vehicles - ideal for 4WD vehicles or 2WD with a high wheelbase, limited car pool available

Maximum participants: 20
Minimum participants: 8

What to bring:
- Waterproof and warm clothing
- Sturdy walking shoes or tramping boots (gumboots also appropriate)
- Sunglasses/sunscreen/sun hat
- Gloves and warm hat
- Lunch and plenty of water
- Personal first aid kit
- Personal medication

Be aware:
Contact lenses may be damaged by geothermal steam or fluid droplets - it's recommended participants wear eye glasses.

The decision to cancel a trip due to weather is often unable to be made until just before the scheduled departure time. Trips may also be cancelled a week out if the minimum participant number is not reached.
