Kiwi North provides the only captive Kiwi and Tuatara viewing in Northland. Our kiwi are part of the captive breeding programme, and we have Department of Conservation permits for display and advocacy. We do not breed here and when they are mature our resident pair will move on to a breeding facility, and we will get two more young birds to raise and introduce our visitors to.

We are doing our bit to save our national icon by telling others why they are so very special. Another amazing animal unique to New Zealand is the Tuatara, our living dinosaur. Although Flash is not quite 8 years old, the species has been around and survived for over 250 million years! During school holidays our Tuatara comes out for an encounter on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, starting Monday 8th January through to Friday 26th January.

This is held after 11am Kiwi feeding and always at the discretion of the keeper as the welfare of the animal is always our priority. But we have never had to postpone. We also have native gecko, and there is lots to see and learn in the living natural history section.

Through in the adjoining Whangarei Museum local social and natural history is exhibited. This includes a fabulous WW1 Centennial Exhibition, the Moa Caver Exhibition, the story of Whangarei's very own Moa discovered on the edge of the city 4 years ago, a selection of our large taonga Maori section and various other displays.

The Mim Ringer Gallery is displaying the Bernina Up-Close Exhibition, with entries from the 40th Bernina Northland Fashion Awards. The Trash to Fashion and Wearable Art pieces are astounding, and it is a great opportunity to see them "up-close' and work out what they are made of and how. The young age of many of the contestants says a lot about the huge pool of creative talent that Northland seems to produce constantly.

School Holiday Programme with the Kiwi North Educator- (listed separately) - 8th to 26th January.

Out on the Park you can explore the heritage buildings including the original 1886 homestead, The Clarke Homestead, a museum in her own right. On certain days (listed below) the resident clubs will have their doors open with mini trains, big trains and tractors giving rides to visitors.

Medieval Madness Sunday 28th January (listed separately) - a fantastic event day, unique to Kiwi North here is Northland. Medieval displays on horseback, combat displays, games, food and fun. The awesome drumming band Clan Celtica will be with us again this year, with their wild tribal thunder! A rousing way to end the school holidays.

So come and spend some time with us this summer. An hour, half a day, all day. Your ticket allows all day entry, including leaving and returning on the same day if you wish.
