Having already written a play set in WWI, Dave Armstrong didn’t want to write one about Gallipoli until he had the idea of a modern-day tale.

Anzac Eve is about four young backpackers from Down Under going to Gallipoli for the Dawn Ceremony, complete with selfies and smuggled vodka.

Are they there for patriotic pride or a possible hook-up?

In this poignant but funny rite-of-passage story, Maia, a self-confessed ‘Brizzie bimbo’ and Lizzie the Mozzie (a Maori Australian) meet Kiwis Ben, a graduate of New Zealand history, and Phil, a graduate of the Munich Beer Festival.

“It is a rare play which can cram in so much in so short a time, but an even rarer one which can do it with such vibrancy, flair and humour.” - Alan Scott - Theatreview

This play was commissioned by the Festival of Colour and funded by NZ WW1 Centenary Fund.
