Vanessa York from Fleurs du Mal is visiting Waiheke Island to host a hands-on workshop. She will share the olfactory experience of up to 50 different aromatics and you will learn the techniques to evaluate them, leading to a basic understanding of base, middle and top notes, the building blocks of perfume composition.

Vanessa will eloquently speak about the history of perfume (she has an English literature background), including the advent of synthetics in the 20th century and the recent renaissance of natural perfumery, in which all materials are derived from plants or, in a few cases, such as ambergris, from animals.

You'll have the opportunity to look at some NZ-specific scents and perfume materials. You'll explore blending accords, and create your own perfume to take home.
