“I don’t like jazz, but I loved that!” – a happy punter.

The Jac is an 8-piece ensemble featuring some of New Zealand’s foremost musicians from the jazz, classical and metal scenes, including members of The Troubles, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and the Richter City Rebels.

Drawing heavily on all of these genres and more, they perform cinematic, suite-like compositions. The writing of Jake Baxendale, Callum Allardice, and Daniel Millward allows its members to combine the tightly controlled power of a big band with the intimacy, playfulness, and interaction of a small chamber jazz group. Intelligent and intricate, yet deeply grooving, this band is a must-see.

The Jac has released two albums on Rattle Jazz; the first, Nerve, was a finalist for the Jazz Album of the Year in 2014. The second, The Green Hour, was released in October 2015 and met with consistent critical acclaim from reviewers as diverse as Graham Reid, Simon Sweetman, and William Dart.

Lex French - trumpet
Jake Baxendale - alto saxophone
Chris Buckland - tenor saxophone
Julian Kirgan - trombone
Callum Allardice - guitar
Daniel Millward - piano
Nick Tipping - double bass
Shaun Anderson - drums

They are supported at Audio Foundation by the Callum Passels Trio:

‘If anyone harboured the briefest thought that this group should be cut some slack on account of age or experience, forget it. What we saw was a slick act, a great programme and the sort of discipline that generally comes with seasoned performers. This band did the business and they held us in the palm of their hand throughout.’

John Fenton: Jazz Local 32.

- Callum Passels - saxophone.
- Michael Howell - guitar.
- Tristan Deck - drums.
