What makes a story good and what makes a storyteller interesting? In this workshop we’ll share stories, break them down and cover the whole process from the page to the stage; looking at ways to generate stories, find the appropriate structure and choose the right balance between writing vs. improvising, truth vs. embellishment and comedy vs. drama. We’ll also address some practicalities of performance and talk about the foundations of personal memoir and storytelling. Bring a pen and paper and, if you have one, a short (<5 minutes) story from your own life that you’d like to work on. This will be an open, supportive environment with no experience necessary and no obligation to perform.

Gerard Harris is a storyteller from the UK who has been touring and telling stories around the world for the last 5 years. In the last 12 months, he has performed in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Spain. During 2016 he also won Best Solo Show at Nelson Fringe, Best Comedy at Dunedin Fringe and Best of Fest at Ottawa Fringe.

Starting out as a joke writer for a well-known British comedian and scriptwriter for the BBC, he now performs in Fringe and Theatre Festivals, works with high schools to introduce the personal storytelling form to students, and coaches writers, performers, business people and anyone else who wants to explore personal memoir and/or improve their public speaking skills.
