Award-winning Wellington composer Michael Riddell and Eastbourne writer Emanuel E. Garcia have teamed up to create an original song cycle, a selection of which will be premiered on Sunday, 19 March.

The complete cycle is written for soprano, tenor and piano, but this performance will highlight songs for soprano alternating with readings of the poems. The full cycle will be performed later this year.

Soprano Barbara Graham will sing, Lauren Simpkins will play piano and Emanuel Garcia will read.

About These Words Are Meant for Someone:
Although every poem is itself inherently musical, born and bred out of the rhythms of the poet's mind, and alive when read aloud, setting a poem to music or, rather, composing music based upon poetry, creates another artistic dimension altogether.

Michael Riddell's song cycle for soprano, tenor and piano, based upon the poems of Emanuel Garcia, tells the endless story of lovers striving to express - to each other and to themselves - what their quintessentially human encounter brings.
