Wellington’s own Thomas Gaynor is making his mark worldwide with his fantastic talent as an organist. Currently based in Rochester, New York at the Eastman School of Music, he is completing his studies, pursuing a Doctorate in Musical Arts and Artist’s Certificate.

In recent years he has performed in numerous exciting recitals worldwide and garnered many awards and prizes from prestigious competitions. Such honours include the winner of the Third International Bach-Liszt Organ Competition in Erfurt/Weimar in Germany, the Sydney International Organ Competition and the Fort Wayne National Organ Playing competition, a prize winner at the St Albans International Organ Competition. He’s also the recipient of many awards and scholarships including most recently the New Zealand/Aotearoa Scholarship from Creative NZ.

This concert on 2 May is the second of two engagements Thomas will be a part of. The first engagement is with the Orpheus Choir of Wellington on 29 April at Wellington Cathedral of St Paul’s. The choir’s first concert as part of the Cathedral series is a programme of Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and James MacMillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross.

Thomas’ recital at St Mary of the Angels will allow him to perform on the newly refurbished Maxwell Fernie organ. It will be the beautiful organ’s first recital after the church reopens following its earthquake-related work.
