Many Pacific peoples growing up in New Zealand can recall attending the popular church hall social dances.

At these occasions, to raise funds, women's groups in an urban contexts, created the contemporary lei using different types of materials including dyed pandanus, plastic, lollies and wrappers, ribbons and crepe paper to sell at the functions. People would donate and wear/gift the lei while they joined in the dances. Some would adorn their family portraits in the lounge, as these leis represent love.

For this Festival we're recreating that memory in our café. We are pleased to welcome the Native Chef, aka Erolia Ifopo and her Retrospective Ula Lei Making workshops. Bring yourself and some friends and have a go at creating a gift of colourful contemporary lei for someone special; to gift at a festive celebration or a special occasion.

The practice of contemporary Pacific crafts supports the main attraction of the festival – the moving image.
