The Major Minors Children’s Choir is celebrating 5 years of singing this November. The choir that started out as a 3-month project with no name in 2012 is in final preparations for a special anniversary concert in Upper Hutt in November.

Musical Director Joanne Roelofs who started the choir in Upper Hutt, as part of a project with The Hutt Valley Singers, said the 40 strong kids choir which is run voluntarily has grown from strength to strength in numbers and in sound and the choir has had many achievements over it’s five years.

We had so much fun with the kids we decided to continue. We’ve won choir competition awards, performed with The Hutt Valley Singers and a kids choir from Auckland, will be performing with Arohanui Strings and have also been heard singing at Staglands, at Upper Hutt events, in Lower Hutt, Wainuiomata, and in Wellington.Next year the choir will be part of the Just So Festival at Kaitoke Regional Park in February.

The choir sing all sorts of songs and the children currently are aged 5-16. There is also an auditioned group of singers in The Harmonic Minors who sing more challenging music and sing many of the harmony parts with the younger kids.

The concert features some songs from the first concert, and a number of favourites the kids have enjoyed working on.
