Weston Frizzell’s upcoming exhibition ‘Populism‘ opens at ARTIS Gallery on Tuesday 5 December 5:30 – 7:30pm.

Weston Frizzell is a mixing and remixing – of identities, images, ideas, art, advertising, music, politics, and people. Although the name may deceive you, the self-titled art brand is a fusing of the creative energies (and surnames) of two separate individuals, Mike Weston and Otis Frizzell.

Together they draw from a vast pool of cultural images, bringing the iconography of commerce into direct confrontation with the “high art” of New Zealand modernism to produce their own visually arresting and witty works of art.

Underneath the painted surface of Weston Frizzell works, the remixing of New Zealand art with commercial culture occurs on a molecular scale. Extending an artistic tradition beginning with Jackson Pollock, Otis and Mike use paints more commonly found on the outside of houses and cars than in artworks.

Often these are glossy, vintage enamels and specialist industrial coatings found on one of their regular excursions to recycled paint dumps. A significant moment for Weston Frizzell came with the realisation that such paint could be engineered to match, if not surpass, that of New Zealand modernists.

The artworks produced with these engineered materials are, additionally, more durable than traditional oil painting, and the paint layer much more chemically stable than that of the domestic enamels pioneered by Pat Hanly and Colin McCahon.

Observing Weston Frizzell’s works, one is struck not only by their originality, technical achievements, visual splendour, and wit, but also by the intense sense of familiarity that they evoke.
