Since 2001 this epic yacht race across the unpredictable Cook Strait has combined the excitement of offshore racing with the exhilaration of releasing a new vintage of Marlborough Wine into our capital city from the mainland.

This unique yacht race is loosely based on the traditional "Beaujolais Nouveau" where the first Beaujolais wines were transported from France to the UK.

Starting just outside the the entrance to Tory Channel in the Marlborough Sounds, our hardy skippers often push the limits of their yacht and crew in potentially testing conditions to be the first to deliver their wine across the finish line in Wellington Harbour. In 2016, 43 yachts with 258 crew raced across Cook Strait, all safety arriving with the bottle of wine intact!

The WIneWorks Marlborough Wine Race is a spectacular event which is growing and evolving at a fast pace. This event is also now recognised as a major event on Yachting New Zealands Race calendar.

The Waikawa Boating Club have organised this event since inception and in 2015 partnered with Life Flight in a mutually supportive relationship.
