The Innes48 Business Startup Competition is the largest of its kind in New Zealand and provides participants with a platform to connect with like-minded individuals, learn business fundamentals, execute rapidly & meet experienced mentors. The event attracts entrepreneurs, business leaders, teams, mentors and high profile judges from all over New Zealand for an action packed weekend in Hamilton.

Named after Mary Jane Innes, one of Hamilton's pioneering female entrepreneurs, the competition starts on Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday evening.

As a guest on Friday, you will hear from leading industry experts about their successes, failures, and learnings as an entrepreneur before the 15 competing teams launch into 48 hours of conceptualisation, rapid learning and execution.

As a guest on Sunday, you will hear from the top 6 teams who have been chosen by the high profile judges to present their opportunities on stage. Each team has 5 minutes to pitch their business and will have 5 minutes of Q&A from the judges. The teams are competing for $12,000 cash and a plethora of business prizes.

Featuring Guest Speakers on Friday Night:

1. Kelvin Soh - The creative director of DDMMYY and New New. With nearly 20 years of experience in the areas of creative direction, graphic design and brand strategy, Kelvin situate his practice somewhere in the intersection of Art, design, fashion and consumer lifestyle branding.

2. Ben Stanton - Ben started as an Electrician and always had a bent for pulling things apart to see how they work and adventure, both in the outdoors and in technology. The Power Genius is one of his many crazy ideas that SODA inc. partnered with and helped him to grow into what it is today.

3. Bridgette Jackson - Bridgette is currently the Change Maker at Organic Initiative (OI), a Kiwi owned social enterprise that is revolutionising how people view women’s health.

Featuring Guest Judges on Sunday Night:

1. Linda Jenkinson - ​Serial entrepreneur. Global citizen. Wife. Mother. Social entrepreneur committed to making the world a better place for all. She is behind the development of five businesses and a social venture, WOW for Africa, and sold her collective companies for over $750 million while raising more than $350 million of investor backing.

2. Chip Dawson - Chip is an American and a permanent resident of New Zealand who brings a wealth of talent and skills to New Zealand board. Prior to coming to New Zealand in 1989, Chip spent five years with Apple Computer Corporation USA, responsible for a team that managed large corporates and established a distribution model for Apple Computer in California.

3. Nevil Gibson - Nevil Gibson has held senior positions at The National Business Review since 1985, including editor in chief. Before that he was chief reporter, network news, at Radio New Zealand. He has contributed film and book reviews to various publications and has judged a wide variety of business awards. He makes regular appearances on The Panel with Jim Mora on Radio New Zealand National.

In 2016, the highly energetic event attracted 22 team applications, with only the top 15 teams chosen to compete. The opening and closing ceremonies were packed to capacity with contestants, investors, sponsors, mentors, judges and business community leaders.
