When innocent little girls enter fantasy worlds, things often don’t turn out to be innocent at all. This course focuses on what happens both to the girl protagonists and the worlds they enter when the likes of Alice and Dorothy march into fantasyland.

Familiarity with some of these books or the film versions would be a plus, but is not required:
- Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
- L Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
- CS Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia (especially The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe)
- Maurice Gee, The O Trilogy (especially The Priests of Ferris)
- Philip Pullman, His Dark Materials (especially The Amber Spyglass)
- Neil Gaiman, Coraline

Target audience: This course is for anyone with an interest in children’s literature.

By the end of this course, you will have:
- Gained an appreciation of the literary aspects of children’s literature.
- Compared a variety of texts from different eras.
- Evaluated diverse critical approaches to children’s literature.
