Theatrically presented original poetry featuring masks, movement, sets, lighting and props.

Semi-song with live guitar interspersed with some pre-recorded soundtracks from the artist’s previous bands. Content from the metaphysical to surreal, satirical commentary on poignant social issues, to organic beauty. The show will vary from night to night. This venue is intimate and seating is limited to 15 at the most.

Matthew Robertson has travelled widely and frequently throughout New Zealand, the USA and in Western Europe presenting his poetry in his unique inimitable style integrating costumes and masks and stylish movement often in a sheer improvisatorial fashion with many different solo musicians and bands.

These have included members of the Ray Charles Band, Talking Heads, The Band, Steppenwolf, Alkatraz, The Weird Al Yankovic Band, Carlos Lomas, and Michael Schroeder, as well as many other individual musicians both here and overseas - too numerous to list. He is enormously grateful for the generosity of these musicians in providing brilliant music time and time again for him to improvise his poetry with. Always a fringe performer.

The main difference to be noted in this show is that it is rehearsed material with specific musical compositions rather than improvisation with whatever music comes up. However, this is not to deny that improvisation might occur to a greater or lesser degree according to the spirit of the occasion. It is also highly possible that guests will share the stage with Robertson.

You will hear current compositions played live by guitarist, Brian Doig, as well as pre-recorded compositions by musicians from Robertson’s earlier bands including Jan Bille and the Stellar Haze Band, Paul Naumann of MattMann, and Richard Price of MattRicks. In addition, you will hear his poetry with instrumentals recorded by Jim ‘Kimo’ West of the Weird Al Yankovic Band.

The events will be held in his studio where he has designed and constructed a small theatre - Room 105 in King Edward Court at 291 Stuart St on the corner of York Place and Stuart Street.

To find the venue, the easiest way is to come in the main entrance on Stuart Street and climb the stairs up to the first floor and then turn left and head towards the west end of the building. You will find Room 105 on your right. The way will be well sign-posted. Wheelchair access is available via the 158 York Place entrance. Head towards the yellow door then turn right and take the first door on your left. Once again this route will be well marked.

This free show is timetabled, 7:00-7:45pm, a show that will finish in time to enable audiences to attend other Fringe functions in the inner city that may start at 8:00pm or later.

The event is free but to make sure that you will be able to get into such a small venue you can text 021 114 7971or email to

CD’s of Robertson’s recorded material will be available at the show for purchase.
