Wow! Central Otago Easter holiday action is all about wings. Wings that keep warbirds in the air over Wanaka. Wings that keep 850+ horsepower Sprintcars, speedway's fastest class, from getting airborne (well, most of the time).

On Good Friday from 4pm big fields of these winged demons will be snarling and sliding around Cromwell’s Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway at around 160 kph in heats and final of the $90,000 Hydraulink 2017/18 Sprintcar War of the Wings (Wow). Further lifting Saturday's excitement meter well into the heart attack zone is the annual stampede of huge horsepower Super Saloons.

Former Sprintcar 1NZ and Cromwell 'T' driver, 2018 SI Sprintcar Champion and defending 2016/17 Wow winner, Christchurch's Jamie 'Duffman' Duff (19C) heads the 2017/18 Wow leaderboard with a mind boggling six wins from nine races. Just 18 points adrift of Jamie is Nelson 'wunderkinder', 18 year old Conor Rangi (57N) who in turn has longtime Cromwell 'T' Daniel Anderson (44T) 79 points behind him.

Just 10 points from Daniel's exhaust pipe is hard-charging Luke Keegan (87C). All these jandal to the metal drivers are in with a mathematical chance of leaving Cromwell with the Hydraulink 2017/18 Wow title and prize money. Don't for a moment thank it takes testosterone to get into a Sprintcar cockpit.

Should all go to plan, 6N will be pushed out onto the track with young Alicia Mclauchlan holding the reins of some 850 horses. A former TQ champ, Alicia is 8th on the 2017/18 Wow leaderboard. Go girl!

When it comes to horsepower, Super Saloons are right up there with Sprintcars and on Good Friday at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway there will a heap of these methanol gulping, flame-belching V8 bad boys racing like there's no tomorrow in the annual Super Saloon Stampede.

Included in the high calibre Super Saloon driver lineup is defending Stampede champ and Cromwell Speedway Club President Daryl Ainsley (5T) and in 34T Ray Stewart, easily speedway's fastest pensioner. Be prepared for gobsmacking, hold your breath track action.

Easter at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway is speedway at its best with Good Friday also Day 1 of the Henry's 2017/18 Easter Champs. A feature of Day 1 and Day 2 (Easter Sunday) will be 19 Six Shooters, Cromwell's biggest ever turnout of these Holden powered open wheelers (also known as Wingless Sprintcars).

It's great to see at least three Six Shooter drivers representing the fair sex. Other classes racing hard out in the Easter Champs include Saloons, Productions and Youth Ministocks.

Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway is 'The Fastest Family Show on Earth' where you can park on the natural amphitheatre and look down on the track action from the comfort of your own vehicle.

But to get a good spot be there for when the gates open at 2pm. There's hot food, great coffee, Mr Whippy and Clubhouse sausage sizzle.
