Helen Pollock - Falls the Shadow.
A reflection through sculpture on the trauma of World War I.

Helen Pollock is a distinguished sculptor, the daughter of a WWI signalman. Earlier this year she received the ONZM for services to art and sculpture.

Helen’s Jack Lyon address will review her recent works commemorating the trauma and long-term consequences for New Zealanders of the war, including:

‘Between the memory and the silence, Falls the Shadow’, a tribute to sacrifices made by the New Zealand Division on the Western Front. This sculpture is now permanently installed in the Passchendaele Memorial Museum on the battlefield site of New Zealand’s most tragic day at war.

‘Victory Medal’ honours the ordinary soldier, describing them all as heroes. ‘Victory Medal’ has toured the provinces in New Zealand, and as the soldiers did a century ago, crossed the sea to three battlefields sites significant to New Zealand; Arras, Messines and Le Quesnoy, for their centenaries.

‘As Above, So Below’ is a bronze and water tribute to the New Zealanders who fought at sea, now permanently sited in the WWI Pavilion at the RNZ Navy Museum in Devonport.
