The Wellington-born playwright Bruce Mason (1921-1982) is considered by many to be the father of New Zealand theatre. So it is fitting that the opening event for New Zealand Theatre Month is a tribute to Mason, to be held, naturally, at the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna.

The event will feature a reading from Mason's play Hongi, directed by John Smythe, with Haami Piripi, Chief of Ahipara and a direct descendant of Hongi Hika, in the lead role; a scene from his last stage play Blood of the Lamb, performed by Rima Te Wiata; a reading of the infamous public correspondence between Mason and Sir Donald Wolfit, by Roger Hall; and a performance of Mason’s reworking of our National Anthem by Max Cryer.
