This November sees the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. At 11am on 11 November 1918, hostilities ceased across the many battlefields of the First World War, finally bringing over four years of intense and costly fighting to an end.

Join us for a day of programming, events and activities at the Museum for Armistice 100.

Library War Collections Displays

The library will open make a special dispensation and open this Sunday, so you can discover the journey along the road to peace in this boutique display of paintings, photographs, letters, and ephemera from our First World War collection.

Explore our Memorial Discovery Centre where you can find out more about a service-person using Online Cenotaph and other library resources.

Play It Strange Peace Song Winners
Approx. 12 Noon, directly following the Commemorative Service
WWI Hall of Memories

Play it Strange Trust supports talented young musicians reach their potential through programmes of songwriting, performance and recording. Join past winners of their Peace Song competitions as their present their original and insightful compositions. Performers will include Sonatane Kaufusi from Manurewa High School and Silika Isaia from Papatoetoe High School. Performances will also feature Baradene College’s Cor Unum Choir.

Auckland Girls’ Choir reprise their annual Armistice Day performances with a selection of wartime favourites and songs of remembrance.

ACG Parnell Senior College
WWI Hall of Memories

APOPS (Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Partnership Schools Programme) unites schools across Auckland with APO musicians and mentors. Listen to the chamber orchestras and choir from one of these schools, ACG Parnell, as they fill the Sanctuary space with music of reflection and remembrance.

The Museum will remain open in the evening until 8.15pm. Take advantage of this by joining our experienced guides and exploring the stories of both World Wars. Meet at the Big Red Arrow outside Pacific Lifeways on the ground floor.

Waldstein Trio

This string trio will reflect the atmosphere of solemnity and commemoration as visitors enter the Museum to freely wander the galleries, add a message to our Peace Tree and find their connections on our Online Cenotaph database.

Royal New Zealand Artillery Band
Grand Foyer

It is fitting that New Zealand’s oldest military band, established 154 years ago, and should join us for our evening event on Armistice 100 Day. The Band of The Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery will play a 45-minute selection of familiar marches and war tunes, in the Grand Foyer from 7.15pm - under their Director WO2 Steven Booth. Come and listen to this popular band as they bring our historic commemorative occasion to a rousing crescendo.

Lone Piper
Northern Steps of the Museum

Lex Calder fills the evocative role of the lone piper on the northern steps of the Museum, stirring emotions with familiar tunes and laments as the sun sets on Armistice Day.

Last Post
Northern Steps of the Museum

Join us as the skies darken on Armistice Day for this most sombre of traditions, as the Last Post is performed by a bugler from the Band of the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery.
