About the Art Work
In "Scrub Burning, Northern Hawke's Bay", soft billowing clouds loom above the emerald green cloisonné-like bush. The scene is based on a fire lit by Rita Angus’s nephew Anton Jones, who was clearing scrub in Maungataniwha, northern Hawke’s Bay. Angus was a powerful visual recorder and many of her paintings of nature were based on long periods of intense study. In this painting, objects emerge, almost recognisable, through a patchwork of pink smoke, which takes on a sculpture form and conveys a sombre and ominous feeling

"Scrub burning, Northern Hawke's Bay" is currently on display at Auckland Art Gallery as part of the exhibition "Earthly Visions".
