Local historian, Lisa Truttman, explores of the stories of the Western Bays Chinese market gardens from the 1880s to the 1940s.

Explore the stories behind the largest combined area of Chinese market gardens on the Auckland Isthmus, those which were once at Arch Hill and Mt Albert, along with surrounding earlier ones in Herne Bay and Grey Lynn, and later ones at Point Chevalier. Lasting from 1880 through to the 1940s, these gardens helped supply Aucklanders and visitors to the city with fresh vegetables, and provided the basis for the growth of Chinese businesses that led to the establishment of a settled Chinese community here in Auckland, despite discrimination, thefts, wild chases after pilferers across the landscape, and shooting incidents.
