‘Away’ is a multi-award winning play and regarded as one of Australasia’s greatest modern classics. It is the summer of 1967-1968 and 3 families from very different social backgrounds head for the coast to get away. It is set in a time that is dealing with the Vietnam War and wrestling with social upheaval and the rise of materialism. We see the internal conflict of family life against the struggle of a country shaping its future.

3 mothers, one recovering from the loss of a child, one fearing the loss of her own and one learning to let go, are each determined to take this holiday as a restful time, but the pressures of family life gather into a storm with transformational consequences.

The play is dramatic, funny and uplifting and focuses on the Shakespearean theme of rejuvenation with brief scenes from A Midsummer Night's Dream and King Lear. Gow also draws on Shakespearean devices such as soliloquy, a play-within-a-play and a tempest during the play.

Quotes:

'Both witty and poignant, Away is multi-tonal; spare, poetic, a fantasia, a comedy of embarrassments and a multi-layered play which explores the many meanings of the word 'away'.'

'Gow balances epic forces - dark and light, life and death, rage and forgiveness - elegantly and even delicately..in a way that is unsentimental, true, funny, affectionate and wise.' - Hilary Bell.

'Away is sharply observed, clever, funny & yet moving.'

'Imbued with his own mortality, [Puck-like Tom] is inspired despite his pain to lead others out of theirs...The play gains accordingly by being delightfully funny, distinctly resonant, and deeply moving.'

'A magical play that everyone can relate to.'
