Bob Marley in Auckland.

A few photographs by Murray Cammick of Bob Marley's 1979 tour have been seen in exhibitions or in magazines but for the first time a larger number of his photos will be projected on a screen inside the foyer of the Ellen Melville Centre from Tuesday 30 January to Wednesday 7 February.

Cammick photographed Marley arriving at the airport, the pōwhiri outside his hotel, Bob Marley playing soccer, the concert and the presentation of Gold Discs to Bob Marley and the Wailers, beside the pool of the White Heron Hotel.

There was talk of a possible interview, so media including TVNZ’s Dylan Taite and RipItUp magazine showed up at Marley’s hotel and Taite came prepared with his soccer boots. A game commenced in the reserve adjacent to the hotel. Cammick recalls: “I hung around taking photos and made myself useful retrieving the soccer ball when it went down the bank. I handed the ball to Marley and he asked if I wanted to play but I declined. I was more likely to kick the man and not the ball.”

DJ set: Bob Marley & Family Live Forever

Murray Cammick hosts the 95bFM funky music show “Land Of The Good Groove’ and he enjoys playing Bob Marley in his mix of soul and funk. For his February 2, 11am to 2pm, vinyl-only DJ set at Ellen Melville Hall, Freyberg Place, he will include Bob Marley & The Wailers studio and concert recordings, remixes and the music of The Melody Makers, Rita Marley and his sons Ziggy, Damien, Stephen etc.

Cammick is not a reggae purist, he loves the 60s era when Jamaican artists covered USA soul songs, contemporary re-edits and Bob Marley & The Wailers' funkier live recordings like their final concert, recorded in Pittsburgh, USA on Sept 23, 1980 and aptly entitled "Live Forever".

Artist talk:
At the conclusion of the DJ set (2pm), Murray Cammick will give a brief talking about photographing Bob Marley and answer any questions.
