Having remained in print since it was first published in 1984, Margaret Mahy’s The Changeover qualifies as a YA “classic”. In this illustrated talk, Kathryn Walls isolates the considerable extent to which the recent movie version, directed by Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie, departs from Mahy’s novel, replacing its satisfying psychological orientation with features familiar to us from the Duffer Brothers science fiction horror series, “Stranger Things”.

Kathryn Walls is a Professor of English at Victoria University. She began her academic career as a medievalist fasincated by allegory. She has published several articles and book chapters on Mahy’s work, and teaches in a course on writing for children at Victoria.

A Friends of the Dorothy Neal White Collection event.
