Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) and its staff are supporting Manawatu River Source to Sea and Environment Network Manawatu (ENM) to hold a Clean-Up day as part of a global Clean-up event that aims to have 5 per cent of the population collecting litter.
In addition, this event is part of Conservation Week 2018 - conservationweek.org.nz
We are calling for local people to take action in working together to protect our wildlife and waterways. Keep New Zealand Beautiful are providing bags and gloves for volunteers. PNCC staff will be on hand with shelter, litter pick-up sticks, water and transport to shuttle volunteers from the meeting point to the event location. They’ll also remove the recycling for processing where possible and dispose of the rubbish.
Meet at Paneiri Park car park, Maxwells Line (river end) at 1.30pm to register for the event. Volunteers will be briefed and then shuttled along Tip Road to the clean-up site below Jump Park. Sturdy footwear should be worn and under 18’s need to be supervised due to the proximity to deep water. If you have thick/leather gardening gloves please bring them as there are lots of blackberries.
Following the clean-up volunteers are all invited to come along to enjoy a massive bonfire along with food trucks and music at nearby Ahimate Reserve, 5 -9 pm. (See separate eventfinder listing for Koanga Spring Bonfire for more information)
This clean-up event has been Inspired by Wilson Hannon’s talk “ Palmy’s Plastic Pollution – A Challenge” at ENM’s Strategy Day on 11 August. Other ways you can help make a difference:
- Come and hear all about Wilson’s research at 5.30pm on 12 September.
- Join the RECAP Team for a clean-up event in Ashhurst on 15 September.
More information about Wilson's talk and the Ashhurst clean-up can be found at the events calendar at www.enm.org.nz. For further information email Sally at coordinator@enm.org.nz
