'Extension of the Mind' is an exhibition of a body of recent works by Napier artist John Boyd-Dunlop.

Boyd-Dunlop has a unique style of imagination and experiences of his own, which he translates in to drawings executed in ink, gouache and pen.

The negative is always filtered out of the works to show happiness, and people often see their own lives represented in the works; places they have seen, people they have met and things they have done.

Join John to celebrate his opening on Friday 6 April, 5-7pm. All welcome!

About John:
It is always impressive when a man in his 70s starts from scratch on an entirely new and passionate hobby. Two years ago John Boyd-Dunlop started doodling in notebooks with pen and felt colours and it became a bit of an obsession.

So captivated was he by the imaginative characters emerging from his pad, he produced thousands of drawings over those two years. His subjects are delightful figures in groups having fun, single busts and cat people pictured with exotic flora, fantastical birds, and chic-looking dogs.

Producing those dozens of quick and fluid sketches every day has been this man’s apprenticeship into art and draughtsmanship and, as those in the know will tell you, ‘talent is time spent in the studio’.

As his confidence grows so his work has also grown from small sketchbooks up to A1 size drawings in his own show at Creative Arts Napier’s main gallery. He has called his exhibition ‘Extension of the Mind’, a great title for the whimsical and imaginative collection of his newest work in a show of 60 framed and unframed drawings on paper.
